We are so blessed that Kregel Publications added two fantastic books to our home library!  For the last few weeks we have had the pleasure to read two books from their Goldtown Beginnings Series.  For this review, we received physical copies of:

Jem Strikes Gold

Jem's Frog Fiasco

We are introduced to Jeremiah "Jem" and his sister Ellie in this first book. They live on Cripple Creek with their mom and dad, and times are rough. Their dad pans for gold, just getting flakes, so their mom tries to make ends meet by baking and delivering pies. They run into trouble when a bullying rich kid, Will Sterling, starts picking on Jem every time he's out making a delivery for his mom-nearly ruining the pies and the family's livlihood. Jem discovered a dog, and he wonders if he will convince his mom to let him keep it. The dog saves Jem, and the family when it defends both against the bullying pest!

Jem's Frog Fiasco

Edition: October 15, 2019
Pages: 80
Dimensions: 5.3" x 8"

Gold Nugget, Jem's dog from Book 1, needs food, but Jem just can't pan any gold! His solution is to find a job, and he's presented with one that will allow him to catch bullfrogs for the local cafe. His little sister wants to tag along, and she causes all of the frogs to jump back into the pond! All of that hard work for nothing! As you can imagine, heated words are exchanged and Ellie storms off. Jem returns home with a pail full of frogs, only to find Ellie missing. Jem is forced to decide to either find his sister, or save the frogs he's managed to catch.

OUR EXPERIENCE

We love all books written my Susan K. Marlow, and have been blessed to have reviewed several titles in the past. As always, these books are full of exciting adventure, and learning opportunities as well. I love how there is a vocabulary word list in the beginning of each book. These work great as spelling words, and overall definition work. Mr. B is old enough now, that he knew most of the words, but a few like "peddler" were slightly more foreign for him. Princess J is a little behind in reading, so reading on her own wasn't possible. I read these to both her and Girl, while Mr. was easily able to read through these rather quickly.

I also love the "peek into the past" portion. This gives an overall historical lesson insight into the background of the story for more understanding.

Here are more interesting links!

Overall, another Susan K. Marlow hit! We highly recommend these to others!
