Our Experience

Math Whizz is intended as a math supplement for children ages 5-13. Mr. B is 13, but as I mentioned before it tailors to your child. So while he is 13, his "math age" isn't. Math Whizz offers a nifty assessment that your child is to take first. This generates a report that allows you to see what their math age is across a variety of topics.

I must admit, I was quite shocked that pencil and paper math says 8, while fractions say 12.75. I think he tried to do the pencil and paper in head, too. That's a problem we've been having recently.

Logging in is really easy, and it's pretty self explanatory once you log in how to get started. Study is where you find the lessons, console is where the games are. You have a login as a parent, and then your child has a separate login.
Following the assessment, your child goes on to the actual lessons. Now, I'm going to do my best to explain these, but there's a lot here. Your child has a "study." This is like a room that they can decorate, etc. They can even have virtual pets here, but they have to take care of them or else they will lose them! Your child earns coins for doing their lessons, replaying lessons, doing well on tests, etc. Then they can use those coins to purchase things for their study.

I like how the study is kind of decorated for the season. I'm curious to see if this changes with Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Year's!

The program is really great when it comes to explaining how to use it. Mr. B has had no issues at all being about to navigate the site, and use everything on his own.

Using the program is really fun. All he did was click start, and he was off. The program asks your student if they can use it for 30mins each week, and then it gives them a progress bar to show how much time they've spent. This is a great visual aid for special needs kiddos who need that visual aspect to see what they have done.

Here are a few screen shots from inside the lessons.

I like how your child can choose to skip ahead to the next lesson if they already know the one they are on. That helps to reduce redundancy and keep their motivation going. For this lesson, he had completed 4 in a row quickly and correctly, so the program gave him the choice to move ahead. This is great for those who may catch on to a specific topic faster!

As a parent, you can view all progress, and even issue award certificates.

Overall, we are thrilled with this math supplement from Whizz Education. Math-Whizz is exactly what I've been looking for. It's fun, it truly tailors to your child's specific needs, and it includes everything we want in a program including audio-visual, motivating factors, and in program rewards. It's not distracting, and it promotes fun learning. We highly recommend this!

Does Math-Whizz Pass My 4 Ingredient Test?

1.) Customization: Is it easily adaptable? Can we customize it to fit “us?” Can we modify or set our own schedule? Can we take breaks, jump ahead, or flat out skip?

You do not do the adapting, the program does. It customizes itself to fit your child's needs. That is why the initial assessment is so important. We have not tried to take a break in the middle of a lesson, because they're pretty quick and Mr. B likes doing them.

2.) Value: Is it long lasting? Will it cover multiple grade ranges? Are you locked in to one specific grade level? Are there hidden fees?

There is no grade level to choose. Your child takes the initial assessment, and the program is built around that specific to your child. There are no hidden fees. It is intended for ages 5-13. It is only a supplement, but if I'm being completely honest I have seen full curriculum programs with less features! It packs a LOT into it!

3.) Attention span: Is it boring? Is it engaging? Is it varied enough for ADHD? Does it last too long?

Definitely NOT boring! Mr. B loves it. It's varied because there are the lessons, plus a game side, too. and your child can customize their study the way they want, which motivates them to work harder to get more coins to customize even more. It's definitely not too long. There's no repetitive work just for fluff because the program will prompt them to move ahead early if possible.

4.) Does it tie into other things we already have.

This is only math, but I will say the fact your child has to take care of their virtual pet teaches a lot more than just math!
