Back to School-starting out slowly.

It's that time of year when we start thinking about our Back to School routines. For kiddos who may be resistant to changes in their schedules, I always suggest year round schooling to stay on the same daily schedule. While Mr. B adapts well to change, the initial process can be daunting at times, so we ease back into a school routine rather than full on year-round schooling.

For us, we start as much as a month in advance just doing a few minutes of a single subject. We always do review products, but to him that's his "work" and not his schooling during the summer. So I will add in math or reading, just for maybe 10 or 15 minutes a couple times a week. Then I will increase that to three times a week, then four...and ultimately the goal is to have him working on this subject four days a week, for the normal 30 mins duration. Then we will add in a second subject, two to three times a week for 15-20 mins, then three-four times a week for 20mins, and end at four times a week for thirty minutes. That's usually all that's necessary for our particular family, and I can throw in the rest by about the 3rd week or so.

This method not only allows us to ease into a routine with little disturbance to him, but it also allows us to get a bit more ahead in the subjects of reading and math, which I feel are the most important, so that if sickness happens he won't get too far behind.
