All of the books have the same layout. Chapter one is a great lead-in chapter to get your reader drawn in. Chapter two is when the story gets going with the childhood. In this case, we are taken back to the days of the Civil War when Milton Hershey was a little fella and his maternal uncles insisted upon taking their sister and nephew to Pennsylvania because they did not feel as if Milton's father had their best interest at heart. He joined them, and from there his father won the battle to send Milton to school. His mother had wanted him to just become a Mennonite farmer, but his father had big dreams for his young son. Milton did go to school, and the restof the book details how he went on to found the Hershey Chocolate company, and why Hershey, PA is named Hershey. But, beyond the basic story of why and how, there is the underlining story of persistence and triumph in the face of lows and failures. Milton Hershey did not have everything handed to him, and his life was not all sunshine and roses. He had to work hard, and overcome a lot to get to where he was. And he didn't stay at the top alone, he shared what he had with others to make sure everyone was rewarded with a better life.
The Creative Writing is a fun one, too. We did this as an art activity though.
Buy far Mr. B's favorite section is the Social Studies part. He LOVED these activities. We didn't do a lot of pencil and paper work here, but we did a lot of map work. He also got on Google Maps and would do street views of the locations. He spent hours just exploring around all these different locations!
Overall, we love YWAM Publishing. We have been pleased with every book we've had for review, and look forward to reading more! I would highly recommend these to others, especially with the included study guides!
Does YWAM Publishing Pass My 4 Ingredient Test?
1.) Customization: Is it easily adaptable? Can we customize it to fit “us?” Can we modify or set our own schedule? Can we take breaks, jump ahead, or flat out skip?
The books are physical books, and you can read at your own pace. We had a downloadable study guide, so I was able to print off only what I needed. You can work through the guide as you want, and do what you want.
There are no hidden fees. This is a physical/digital product that does not need a membership or anything like that. It will cover multiple grades/ages.
3.) Attention span: Is it boring? Is it engaging? Is it varied enough for ADHD? Does it last too long?
Mr. B and I both find these to be entertaining and fun reads. He can read them on his own, or we do them as bedtime stories. He loves them.
4.) Does it tie into other things we already have.
YES! The study guide is a unit/theme style study that includes reading, language arts, social studies...you could probably even get math and science in there! It does cover a wide assortment of topics.
