YWAM Publishing REVIEW

YWAM Publishing
YWAM Publishing is one of our favorites! I know I saw that a lot, but it's always true! They have a great assortment of books that are both fun to read and educational. This review period. YWAM blessed us with choices from their Heroes of History series and their Christian Heroes: Then & Now series. For our review, we were blessed with Heroes of History- Milton Hershey, and the study guide that follows the book.

Heroes of History
Why did we choose Milton Hershey: More Than Chocolate?  WE LOVE CHOCOLATE! But more importantly, we love HERSHEY Chocolate! We seem to always have a bag...or 3...of Hershey kisses in the house. As a result, we wanted to learn more about the man who continues to bring smiles thanks to his sweet treats!
Heroes of History by YWAM
As I said before, Milton Hershey: More Than Chocolate is part of the YWAM Heroes of History series. There are several to choose from, and we've had the great blessing to have reviewed from this selection in the past, as well. If I am not mistaken, Meriwether Lewis was the topic of our last review.

About the Book

All of the books have the same layout. Chapter one is a great lead-in chapter to get your reader drawn in. Chapter two is when the story gets going with the childhood. In this case, we are taken back to the days of the Civil War when Milton Hershey was a little fella and his maternal uncles insisted upon taking their sister and nephew to Pennsylvania because they did not feel as if Milton's father had their best interest at heart. He joined them, and from there his father won the battle to send Milton to school. His mother had wanted  him to just become a Mennonite farmer, but his father had big dreams for his young son. Milton did go to school, and the restof the book details how he went on to found the Hershey Chocolate company, and why Hershey, PA is named Hershey. But, beyond the basic story of why and how, there is the underlining story of persistence and triumph in the face of lows and failures. Milton Hershey did not have everything handed to him, and his life was not all sunshine and roses. He had to work hard, and overcome a lot to get to where he was. And he didn't stay at the top alone, he shared what he had with others to make sure everyone was rewarded with a better life.
It amazes me that Milton Hershey built an empire on a 4th grade education. That just goes to show that when you have a true passion and calling, nothing can hold you back! He worked hard, and had little to no support. Then he worked hard to make sure those who worked for him were taken care. In the end, he had created a long lasting legacy that continues giving even today. That, to me, is amazing!
We both found this book fun to read, and very interesting. It's not boring, slow, or dry at all. It moves at a nice pace, and the highs and lows really add a good mix of drama to keep in entertaining. You want to know what happens next. I personally highly recommend reading this while snacking on a few Hershey Kisses or a Hershey with Almonds, but that's just me LOL!
About the Study Guide and How We Used It

I really like the YWAM Publishing study guides. These are great, and packed full of great ideas. I'm going to go over the parts we used during the review. We did not do a lot of the Community Links/Field Trip ideas, or some of the more hands on stuff. We both want to do those things, but we haven't yet.
I really like the Key Quotes. I am always looking for good quotes for things, and I think famous quotes are great to be used as copy work when working on penmanship.
And sometimes, I like to just print them out as a daily or weekly motivator-which is what we do with these.
The next section is for a display corner. We did not do that with this book. We have with others in the past, but not this time. Mr. B wanted to display chocolates, and well...that only lasted a few hours.
Next are Chapter Questions. These are really great. I typically use a post it to mark these pages for easy access and we go to these during the reading. I like to use these as oral discussion questions, but you can easily do them as written essay style questions.
I also like the Vocabulary words. I had Mr. B pick out a few each week, and we'd focus on those terms, the definitions, and the spelling.

The Creative Writing is a fun one, too. We did this as an art activity though.

Buy far Mr. B's favorite section is the Social Studies part. He LOVED these activities. We didn't do a lot of pencil and paper work here, but we did a lot of map work. He also got on Google Maps and would do street views of the locations. He spent hours just exploring around all these different locations!

Overall

Overall, we love YWAM Publishing. We have been pleased with every book we've had for review, and look forward to reading more! I would highly recommend these to others, especially with the included study guides!

Does YWAM Publishing Pass My 4 Ingredient Test?

1.) Customization: Is it easily adaptable? Can we customize it to fit “us?” Can we modify or set our own schedule? Can we take breaks, jump ahead, or flat out skip?

The books are physical books, and you can read at your own pace. We had a downloadable study guide, so I was able to print off only what I needed. You can work through the guide as you want, and do what you want.

2.) Value: Is it long lasting? Will it cover multiple grade ranges? Are you locked in to one specific grade level? Are there hidden fees?

There are no hidden fees. This is a physical/digital product that does not need a membership or anything like that. It will cover multiple grades/ages.

3.) Attention span: Is it boring? Is it engaging? Is it varied enough for ADHD? Does it last too long?

Mr. B and I both find these to be entertaining and fun reads. He can read them on his own, or we do them as bedtime stories. He loves them.

4.) Does it tie into other things we already have.

YES! The study guide is a unit/theme style study that includes reading, language arts, social studies...you could probably even get math and science in there! It does cover a wide assortment of topics.
