Carole P. Roman 3 Book Review!

Carol P Roman Children's Book Author
Carole P. Roman is, hands down, our favorite children's author. Her books are so  lively, and fun to read, that we read them over and over again. We have quite the growing collection thanks to her blessing us with reviews over the last couple of years from the Carole P. Roman books and collections, and we are so very thankful!

 For this review, we received:

If You Were Me and Lived in... Ancient China

If You Were Me and Lived in... Cuba

If You Were Me and Lived in... Germany

Carole P. Roman has written several books, and we have been blessed to have received quite a selection of those. We have more than a dozen of her books, and I can tell you that they all showcase the same talented writing that draws your kids into the story while teaching them a lesson at the same time. Some of her books teach a moral lesson, such as Oh Susannah: It's in the Bag. Others teach about history, like the our newest If You Were Me and Lived in...Ancient China. Others are more civis/geography based like If You Were Me and Lived in...Cuba.

If You Were Me and Lived in...Ancient China

I chose this book because we've been diving a  little more into Ancient History studies, and this was a perfect fit for us. I was impressed from the first few pages. I love how the illustrations work so well with the story, as they do with all Carole P. Roman books. I love how this shows what a city looks like today vs. how it looked 2000 years ago, but beyond that it asks the child to compare and contrast the differences leading to critical thinking discussions. I like how the books are written on a level that a younger child can easily understand, but based on a topic for an older child to maintain interest. this book about Ancient China has taught Mr. B a lot about the Han Dynasty. He was also fascinated to learn about "lucky" numbers and the importance of colors, and their meanings. I found it interesting to learn black was used as the color of Heaven. White was worn when someone died to honor them. Isn't it interesting how that is completely reversed today?

If You Were Me and Lived in...Cuba

Mr. B chose this one. I'n honestly not sure what his fascination is with Cuba, but he loves learning all he can about it. I love how food and architecture are really showcased in these books. To me, food is a huge cultural phenomenon that seems to be cross-cultural. Each society/location has their own foods, and food is such a central part of our cultural and social lives-beyond the need for sustenance. I always love the interesting facts and information presented in these books, and the amount of research that goes into them. Each book leads us on a researching egg hunt, for lack of a better description. For example, in If You Were Me and Lived in...Cuba we learned about Castillo del Morro, which was a 17th century fort/prison used during the days of pirates. We've been doing a lot of studying about pirates, and pirate ships, so this led Mr. B on a quest to learn more about Castillo del Morro.

If You Were Me and Lived in...Germany

I chose this book because I have been researching my family history and ancestry, and I have wanted Mr. B to join in and learn where he comes from. I was shocked to discover such a strong German background to our family, and I thought he would really appreciate this book as part of our Family Origins Quest. I think right now, Mr. B is more excited to learn about the "Minature Wunderland" (pronounced with a V sound, not a W sound.) Why? Because this book taught him that is the location of the largest model railroad! It even has mini planes that take off from a model airport! How cool is that?! We both enjoyed learning about traditional foods, and other things like that, but I really appreciate the included glossary. This lists some harder words, and their meanings, for easy understanding.

Our Favorite Thing to Do

Mr. B LOVES street view apps, so he will street view many of the places and attractions he reads about in the books. If he can't find it on street view, we will look up images together.

For the Future
Ms. Carole P. Roman, if you are reading this, IRELAND!!!! PLEASE! I looked, and never found one on Ireland, and that would be AMAZING!!!!!! And, if you need a good Irish name for a young lad, just let me know. I just happen to know a great one. Hint...Hint!

Does Carole P. Roman Books and Bollections Pass My 4 Ingredient Test?

1.) Customization: Is it easily adaptable? Can we customize it to fit “us?” Can we modify or set our own schedule? Can we take breaks, jump ahead, or flat out skip?

These are physical "storybook" style books. There's no set schedule for them at all. You could easily adapt the learning to younger, or older, ages.

2.) Value: Is it long lasting? Will it cover multiple grade ranges? Are you locked in to one specific grade level? Are there hidden fees?

WE LOVE THESE! There are books for every age. Even as an adult, I really love the historical and geography based books! There are no hidden fees.

3.) Attention span: Is it boring? Is it engaging? Is it varied enough for ADHD? Does it last too long?

Definitely NOT boring. The books are very engaging, and really draw you in to the story. They aren't too long, or too short.

4.) Does it tie into other things we already have.

YES! There are dozens of choices to choose from!
