The Pencil Grip, Inc. REVIEW

The Pencil Grip, Inc.
The Pencil Grip, Inc. is one of my most FAVORITE companies. They have great products such as KwikStix and ThinStix, sensory fidgets, and these two products: The Ultra Safe Safety Scissors and The 3 Step Pencil Grip Training Kit
The Ultra Safe Safety Scissors
The 3 Step Pencil Grip Training Kit
The Ultra Safe Safety Scissors feature a plastic construction with a plastic guard that has a tiny slit in it where the paper slips through to be cut. It also has a little yellow, plastic piece that helps teach your child how to open and close the scissors. This little lever will keep the scissors always open, and provide just a bit of resistance to help teach your child how to properly squeeze and open the scissors.

The 3 Step Pencil Grip Training Kit is a 3-step set of pencil grips that teach and/or improve your pencil grip. These can be used by right handed or left handed writers. They have a rubbery feel to them, and they fit any standard writing utensil such as a pencil, pen, or even crayons.

Our Experience:

Ok, y'all know I LOVE The Pencil Grip, Inc. I feature them on the blog often-both sponsored, and non-sponsored posts. We love love love love LOVE their KwikStix line of products, and I'm expected more products soon to feature in my holiday gift guide this year. With that said....sigh...the scissors were not a good fit for us. The overall design and idea behind them is GREAT, but-At least in our cases-something happened during manufacturing and they aren't as durable as I'd like them to be. And you've no idea how much it breaks my heart to say that! For very small children, they might be ok so long as the child is gentle, and not overly hard on stuff. But for my 12 year old (small on size) they were easily broken. He used them twice before he had easily broken off the plastic guard. Maybe it's because his autistic mind knew regular scissors did not have a guard? Maybe it's because he had trouble getting the paper through the slit? I don't know. I just know I told him once to stop pulling at it because I was concerned it would break, and the next thing I knew-they were broken. The scissors still work, but not as the ultra safe safety version. The little yellow always open thingy is kind of along the same lines, and I worry it could be a potential choke hazard if one isn't careful with very small children. I had to ultimately take the scissors away from him because I was afraid he'd break that off, or cut himself on the jagged part of the handle where he broke the guard free. Everything else we have every tried from this company has been superb and excellent. I'm not sure what happened with these scissors, and it's possible this is an isolated incident with only our pair, or our situation. I will say, as far as left-handed vs. right-handed use-Mr. B had no problem with left-handed use as far as being able to hold them correctly, and comfortably.

The 3 Step Pencil Grip Training Kit is GREAT! These are exactly what I expect from The Pencil Grip, Inc. in terms of quality and performance. Mr. B has a VERY strange pencil grip, and Princess J has gone from having a very good grip, to fist holding. So these are working VERY well for both kids.
These grips are intended to be used as a 3 step method, and I so wish we had had these when Mr. B was younger as I think these would have prevented his wonky grip he currently fights.

I've never seen this grip before. It's not even on the chart of correct vs. incorrect grips. It's crazy! He uses ALL of his fingers, and it's just....crazy.

His grip isn't any of the listed ones. He's in a league all his own! But, look what happens when he uses the 3rd pencil grip.

This is the last step, and while he's still not perfect, and we are going to be using these more, it's a LOT better. His handwriting is a LOT neater, too. We tried steps 1 and 2, but he was having frustration issues trying to make it "perfect." It's an autism thing for him. So I went to this one to try and get him used to having his fingers together more, without the closed in effect of the first two. Now that he's getting more used to it, I have been able add in the first one a bit more to fine tune his grip.

STEP 1

The 3 Step Pencil Grip Training Kit
This grip doesn't allow for extra movement of your fingers. There's a little covered area there where your fingers slip in, and they can't really move away from that. This is great for first stage training, and I wish we had had this when he was younger. Now that he's had his bad grip for so long, I'm having to backwards chain in a way back to step one. This is where Princess J still is. If I take this grip off her crayons or pencil at all, she goes right back to a fist hold.

STEP 2

The 3 Step Pencil Grip Training Kit
This one still has a bit of an overhang to prevent your fingers from trailing off, but it allows for more freedom and movement. We've moved back into this one for a bit to try and fine time his grip a little more.

STEP 3

The 3 Step Pencil Grip Training Kit
This is his favorite grip, and the one pictured in use. This allows for ultimate freedom, and it's great to use even when you have a good grip already. I've personally noticed that using these grips have helped with hand fatigue and cramping. Mr. B would always whine when he was made to write by hand before, and now he doesn't even argue it.

These pencil grips aren't just for kids. I was curious to see if they would help me. I can tell a big difference in my penmanship while using the grips myself. They make handwriting more pleasurable, less tedious, and give overall better penmanship results.

OVERALL

While the scissors didn't work for us, the pencil grips have worked fabulously. I can tell a huge difference in both  kids' grips just in the few weeks we have used them, and even my handwriting is a lot better. I always highly recommend The Pencil Grip, Inc. and this time is no exception. I hope to see a change in production with the Ultra Safe Safety Scissors as I think they are a great concept that wasn't executed well in the manufacturing stage, but the idea and design is a great one. The grips, especially the 3 step kit, are wonderful.
