Pedro Okoro's Your Best Live Ever {REVIEW}

I was asked to review a book I normally wouldn't have chosen on my own. If you'll notice, I've drifted away from the majority of non-fiction titles because I wanted to fill my mind with a more fantastical genre for a while. Sometimes, opportunities just fall in your lap and you don't expect them....hmmm...why is that? This is one such case. I was asked to read Pedro Okoro's Your Best Life Ever, and write up a review of my thoughts. I agreed, but I had no idea what I was about to read. First, I'm not a huge fan of eBooks to read. I see enough of my computer screen, and really nothing can beat the feel and smell of a book in my hands. This book hasn't been released yet, so eBook it is...again, against my normal mode. Hmmm...

I started reading, and something hit me: "God doesn't have grandchildren." Now, this is the basis of the book, of course, but how often do we get caught up in a thought process of "my parent's went to church, I'm ok..." Or, "We go to church, our children are ok." Thoughts to ponder friends, thoughts to ponder. We are eventually introduced to Att Abrahamson whose son has epilepsy and he sets off on a quest to find a cure for his sudden severe seizures. Att Abrahamson's story is used to illustrate the overall purpose of the book, and that is to find our purpose. the author tells us of his nephew, Tega, who passed at the tender age of 7, without ever fulfilling his God given purpose, and then goes on to say that it's even more sad that some will spend 50, 60, even 80 years alive and never discover what their purpose or potential is. I feel like that. I feel like I've spent my 30 odd years in a daze sometimes. Have I? I really don't know. I'm questioning it. I thought I was destined for more. More than being a stay at home mom. More than being a photographer. I was going to cure cancer, or solve major social problems and fix the world. That's what I felt as if my destiny was to be, but God has other plans. He did not lead me down that path. Instead, he has led me down a path I'd have never dreamed for myself. Perhaps my purpose isn't to change the world on a large macro scale, but on a small microscale, started with my son and spreading autism awareness everywhere I go-including weddings. Maybe?

I like how this book tells you that you don't have to choose between your passion and your purpose, as your passion will be linked with your purpose. And it explains why you may suffer through in order to full achieve your purpose. Joseph being sold into slavery is a great example! It also says we all need help to reach our purpose, even Jesus. And it also talks about needing Vision to discover your purpose. What are you passionate about, and how do you see that playing out in the future. Write it down!

Now, I'm not going to go chapter by chapter and give you my thoughts, except to say I really got something out of this. It's not a dull, slow read. And I like how Att Abrahamson's story is used throughout, providing an overall cohesiveness. The writing style is smooth, and conversational, and not judgmental at all. It is Christian based, but it doesn't feel preachy. This isn't a self help book, but more of a challenge book. It is challenging us to be more that what we are now. It is challenging us to discover the purpose to our existence, the reason God put us on this planet in the first place.
